The Hollywood Drama-Logue raved about "Deus Ex Machina" saying, "The play is a delight, it wonderfully places in perspective the more commercial aspects of the business of belief. ...wonderful vaudeville schtick, outright camp, and a fine understanding of man. ...comic and somehow touching characters in difficult outrageous comedy sequences creating a feeling of real people caught in a surrealistic future space. ...wit, wisdom and downright fun. Bailey makes his point clearly." The San Francisco Bay Guardian called it "One of the best original plays of the year." when it was presented in Berkeley and at the Pacific School of Religion. "Deus Ex Machina" and its prologue piece, "The Hands of the Beholder" are absurd, dark comedies about true believers, religious fundalmentalists, and mystics who claim special knowledge of God. They take place in a rapidly approaching future when uncontrollable fervor is leading to a vaudevillian Armageddon. "Deus Ex Machina" is based on the biblical story of "Abraham and Issac". The nuclear family has split on how to find God and save the world. Father and son join on a rampage to unleash the power that is supposed to be contained in calling out the true name of God. The wife and mother warns of the impending disaster that will be the result of their quest. Ignoring her, they rush headlong through a hilarious melee of mystical, religious, and scientific information as they seek to recreate the days when the money flowed and God smiled upon them. "The Hands of the Beholder" sets the stage for the end of the world when anarchist historians urge that each and every person remain vigilant and become aggressively active in choosing the tools to use in creating history they way they think it should be. Together, they describe a time that has become increasing real and menacing, leaving us only with the ability to tell a few jokes and laugh as the world crumbles around us.

"The Hands of the Beholder" is a very funny and somewhat frightening compendium of conspiracies presented as historic turning points. It's an extended monologue that would test any actor. "Deus Ex Machina" is the meat of the piece. The play is hilarious and heady. Based on the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac, it deals with a nuclear family trying to survive the apocalypse by remembering God's true name in hope of appealing to the Supreme Being for help. The trouble is that despite knowing countless names, nobody really knows how to find God. The play has a strong family dynamic. Desmond, the father, is searching through stacks of books trying to remember what he thinks he once knew, believing it will bring him unlimited power. His son, Jesse, has organized everything into a super computer, cleverly based on the tree of life concept of the kabbalah, hoping it can sift through the endless information and produce God's name from its sound synthesizer. Maja, the wife and mother who is always changing appearance, tries to tell them that God has neither name nor number. Highlights include an edgy Oedipal scene, a very funny Buddhist/existentialist vaudeville complete with song and dance routine, a fundmentalist revival that could bring in the sheves on the tent circuit today, arguments in Latin, a riotous building of a Tower of Babel out of all the books, and a continuing reorganization of the books as the old man tries to get his thoughts together. Ultimately, eveyone is doomed to failure and life will go on as before. While the plays have a simple premise, the production would be obviously challenging. It needs actors that have excellent memories and understand what it means to be a fanatically true believer. The director needs a strong visual sense as the ongoing reorganization of the books into a rising and falling city skyline make for an interesting sculptural aspect. This is a very funny, must read for anyone interested in theatre, religion, and philosophy. After all, the root of the words theatre and theology are the same.Product details
